Construction and Real Estate Survey

Updated on June 19, 2018

The Atlanta Fed conducts a monthly survey of residential brokers and homebuilders in an effort to detect emerging real estate trends prior to the release of official statistics. We also conduct a quarterly commercial construction survey of business contacts who work as general contractors, subcontractors, developers, financiers, and building material suppliers. See below for a detailed summary of the most recent results.

Methodology

  • The monthly Residential Real Estate and Residential Construction polls were conducted June 6–13, 2018, and reflect activity in May 2018. Twenty-five business contacts across the Sixth District participated in the polls: 10 homebuilders and 15 residential brokers.
  • The quarterly Commercial Construction poll was conducted February 5–14, 2018, and reflects activity in the fourth quarter of 2017. Seven business contacts across the Sixth District participated in the poll. Results reflect the collective views of business contacts working as general contractors, subcontractors, developers, financiers, and building material suppliers.
  • The diffusion indexes are calculated as the percentage of total respondents reporting increases minus the percentage reporting declines. Positive values in the index tend to indicate increased activity, and negative values tend to indicate decreased activity.
