Kessel D. Stelling Jr. serves as executive chair of Synovus Financial Corporation based in Columbus, Georgia. Previously, he served as chairman, from January 2012 through April 2021, and as chief executive officer and president, from October 2010 through April 2021. Mr. Stelling also served as president and chief operating officer of Synovus, and from June 2008 until February 2010, he served as the regional chief executive officer of Synovus's Atlanta area market. He joined the company in March 2006 when Synovus purchased Riverside Bancshares Inc., where he was chairman and chief executive officer, and merged it with the Bank of North Georgia.
Before that time, Mr. Stelling worked in various management capacities in banking in Atlanta and Augusta, having begun his career in the industry in 1974. He serves on the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and on the board of Georgia Power, the largest subsidiary of Southern Company, a public company and one of the nation's largest generators of electricity.
Mr. Stelling is a member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. He was formerly treasurer and an executive committee member of the Bank Policy Institute and has served as a director of several civic and nonprofit organizations, including as member and past chair of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Stelling holds a BBA degree in banking and finance from the University of Georgia and is a graduate of Louisiana State University's Graduate School of Banking.
